Keyboard chart with finger positions

A colour-coded chart of the US keyboard on one page: every key shows which finger types it. Print it for the classroom wall or to keep next to the keyboard.

How to use it

  • Print the chart in colour and landscape; in black and white the finger letter on each key helps.
  • Save as PDF: choose “Save as PDF” in the print dialog.
  • For practice, start with the word list “Home row – Basics”.

Keyboard chart: which finger types which key?

US keyboard (QWERTY)

  • Llittle finger
  • Rring finger
  • Mmiddle finger
  • Iindex finger
  • Tthumb

Same colour, same finger – one hand works on each side of the dashed line. The letter in the bottom left corner names the finger, so the chart also works in black and white.

  • Home position: your fingers rest on A S D F and J K L ;. The index fingers sit on F and J – feel the small bumps.
  • After each keystroke the finger goes back to the home row.
  • Capital letters: press Shift with the little finger of the other hand.
  • The small character at the top of a key comes with Shift.
  • Accuracy before speed: looking at the keys is fine at the start.
