This typing test is built for a physical keyboard. It works with an on-screen keyboard too, but your scores will usually be well below what you reach on a computer.

How the typing test works

  1. Test

Measure your typing speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy – with different word lists, durations from 30 seconds to 5 minutes and ten modes: Standard, Sprint, Sudden Death, Combo, Three Lives, Survival, Avalanche, Blind flight, Speed ladder and Cruise control.

  2. Compare

Compete on the live leaderboard, in the daily challenge and in daily, weekly and monthly events. Challenge friends with a link, climb the weekly league and earn a place in the Hall of Fame.

  3. Improve

Race your own personal best as a ghost, let the weak-key training drill the letters you miss most and follow your level, badges and daily quests on your progress page.

Learn touch typing

Touch typing means typing with all ten fingers without looking at the keyboard. These four steps build a clean technique before you chase speed.

  1. Solidify posture and finger placement

    • Rest the heels of your hands loosely, curve your fingers slightly and keep enough room to move for every keystroke.
    • Use ASDF and JKL; as a fixed home position, keep your thumbs on the space bar and start every exercise with neutral wrists.
  2. Practise deliberate keystrokes

    • Control every keystroke consciously without looking at your fingers, so your movements become reliable on their own.
    • Use the bumps on F and J for orientation, move only the finger you need and only extend your five-minute blocks once the technique holds.
  3. Use variation to build muscle memory

    • Switch between word lists and durations on purpose to train muscle memory, posture and precision.
    • Finish every session with a short test and note down WPM and accuracy – visible progress keeps you motivated.
  4. Analyse progress and set goals

    • Compare your results with earlier sessions and combine technique drills with short sprints.
    • Set concrete goals such as an error-free 60-second run and give your hands deliberate breaks. More exercises are in the touch typing guide.

Correct home row position

Adopt an ergonomic sitting posture

Sit upright and plant both feet firmly on the floor. Raise your forearms slightly so your wrists and shoulders stay relaxed. Let your thumbs hover over the space bar and rest your fingers on A, S, D, F and J, K, L, ;.

Keep the home position

Move away from the home position only as far as each keystroke needs, then return your fingers to A, S, D, F and J, K, L, ; right away. Use the bumps on F and J as guides and breathe calmly.

Prevent strain early

Keep your elbows close to your body and set the keyboard at a comfortable angle. Take short breaks or shake out your fingers as soon as you feel tension – that way you can practise touch typing for the long term without overuse. More on desk setup and breaks: ergonomics for heavy typists; which keyboard suits you: mechanical vs. membrane.

Reading your results

Read the numbers together

Look at WPM, accuracy, errors and streak together. If speed rises while accuracy drops, slow down – errors cost more time than they save. How to type with fewer errors is covered in the guide to typing accuracy.

Keep conditions comparable

Compare only runs with the same word list, duration and mode. Note your daily form and distractions if you keep a training log.

Plan and reward progress

Set weekly goals such as 65 WPM at 97 percent accuracy or five error-free Sudden Death runs. Daily quests, badges and your daily streak give you small goals for every session.

FAQ: typing test and touch typing

How is WPM calculated?

One word counts as five characters. FastFingerRace divides the correctly typed characters by five and scales the result to one minute. Incorrect characters do not count, so accuracy directly affects your WPM.

What is a good typing speed?

Many people who type occasionally reach around 30 to 40 WPM. From about 60 WPM with more than 95 percent accuracy you type quickly, and 80 WPM and above is very fast. Accuracy matters more than raw speed at the start.

Which test duration should I choose?

60 seconds is the most common duration and easy to compare. Short runs of 30 seconds or the Sprint mode (25 words) are good for bursts of speed; 3 to 5 minutes show how well you keep your pace and accuracy.

Which game modes are there?

Standard measures your WPM over a fixed time. Sprint times 25 words. In Sudden Death the first mistake ends the run, in Three Lives every wrong word costs a life. Combo multiplies your points for long streaks. In Survival correct words buy you time, and in Avalanche words pile up faster and faster until you can no longer keep up. In Blind flight you type each word from memory, the Speed ladder raises the target speed by 5 WPM every eight words, and Cruise control only counts words that stay on your own beat.

What are level, daily quests and leagues?

Every saved game earns experience points that raise your level and unlock badges. Three new daily quests await you every day, and each week you compete in a league group against players of your tier – the best move up. Everything is on your progress page.

How long does it take to learn touch typing?

With ten minutes of daily practice, many beginners make the switch in four to six weeks. Stay consistently in the home row position and correct errors immediately so that wrong movement patterns do not creep in.

How can I measure my progress?

Note WPM, accuracy and typical errors after each test. Compare them with past sessions under the same settings and set milestones, such as 5 WPM more per week or a steady accuracy of 98 percent.

Is the typing test free? Do I need an account?

The typing test is free and you can start right away without signing up. With a free account your results are saved, you appear on the leaderboard, collect experience and badges, race your own ghost and take part in events and leagues.
